Daddy / Daughter Dance

Last night Lynnea and I went to the 5th Annual Daddy/Daughter Dance at her school.  We had a pretty good time…

A photographer was available to take pictures on the way in.  So we had that done, then we purchased a blue carnation for Lynnea, and then it was off to the dance which was held in the gymnasium.

The evening started off good, but got worse as time went on.  Lynnea was happiest when it was simply free form dancing, but when the DJ began playing favorites and asking the crowd to do them (such as the Macarena or the Twist) Lynnea would get upset, because she “didn't know how to do that dance.” Like her Dad, Neya can be a nervous Nellie, and for that reason, she didn't want to try a lot of the dances. I tried to show her how to do them but she was by that time too caught up in her fear of “messing up” to get her to try anything.  So I suggested “just dance however you want, it doesn't matter,” but that didn't seem to help either.  I felt bad because I wanted Neya to have a good time.

But it wasn't all bad, we still had fun.

It was very hot and very loud and after about an hour or so, Lynnea wanted to go outside for a bit to cool off.  Once outside Neya said she didn't want to dance anymore and wanted to play on the playground instead.  Being a flexible Dad, I said, “Whatever you want honey.”

So we walked over to the playground and Neya played on the jungle gym for a half hour before we headed home.  Ah well, maybe next year's dance will be a little better.  In the meantime, maybe Neya and I will practice dancing some to get over her fear of it.

Here are my pictures from the Daddy/Daughter Dance.

Big Ugly Spider — YUCK!

My daughter saw this big spider in our washroom by the back door and did what she always does around spiders.  She freaked.  I can't blame her, I don't like them either.  Without touching it we carefully captured the spider in her “bug box” (a ventilated clear-plastic container for observing bugs), and we plan to let it go outside later today when it is warmer.

I tried to identify the spider using online resources but without much luck.  I think it might be a common wolf spider.  Its body is about a half inch long, grey brown, and hairy.  It has two dark stripes on its head/abdomen, and four dark spots on its thorax.  If anybody wants to clue me in, be my guest.

In the meantime, looking at picture after picture of spiders has given me the creepy-crawlies, and now I don't want to think anymore about the eight-legged monstrosity in the “bug box” on the washroom shelf. I am officially grossed out at this point.

YUCK!!!
