This morning's bandwidth thief comes to us from a message forum dedicated to Sid Meier's game Civilization. Clearly, this guy found my original article on this subject and decided to hotlink the box art in the message forum. The art was about 70K, and got downloaded 19 times. That's 1.3 Mb of my bandwidth down the tubes for this joker…

You would think some guy with 3,385 posts under his belt would know better.
People hotlink on forums all the time. I don't think they see it as theft, but that's small consolation when your bandwidth is being used up. Your images are probably appearing on google image search and they just link to it.
I consider blog bandwidth thieves much worse, since they are running their own websites.
“Sid Meier's Civiliation III” ??
I like that word: civiliation.
Still. I like your approach to fighting it. It probably makes him look REALLY stupid.
Yes, it's an alternative spelling of civilification, the process by which someone who finds a particular mispelling amusing is made out to be the devil.
Unbecoming Levity is underrated as a great place to learn about new words that have yet to be added to the grand lexicon, but I'm sure there are other blogs that are even better.
Thanks for pointing that out Tracker Jim!
True, but generally message forums get much higher traffic levels… so guys like this tend to chew up my bandwidth much quicker.
