Soap Making Project

The day after making the snow fort, I was pretty sore.  Fortunately Patty and Lynnea had another neat project to try, and even I dragged my lazy butt into the kitchen to get in on the action: making soap…

The soap was made using a Life of the Party “Cool Soap Kit” that Lynnea got for Christmas.  Basically you have two different kinds of glycerin-based soap (clear and milky) that you can melt in the microwave, add scent and dye, and then pour into molds that have been supplied with the kit.

It was great fun!  Check out the photos and commentary in the Making Soap photo album.

That Was Fun!

This was a hit, we definitely need to make soap again sometime.  I find that these glycerin based soaps don't feel like regular soap when dry.  They feel a little bit sticky to the touch, but they're still fun to make and fine for the kids.

Lynnea says: Hooray!  Now I can have a bath with my new soap.  I used a slice of the big bar (the one with the flower) for my bath yesterday.  I thought it was cool but it started to dissolve.

Lynnea is now dancing and cheering “I used dissolve. I used dissolve.”  Smart kid!

They Should Have Called it Hot Soap Kit

Lynnea received a Life of the Party “Cool Soap Kit” for Christmas.  It uses a glycerin based soap you can melt in the microwave, add colors and scents to, and then pour into molds.  If your timing is good, you can do multilayered bars of soap with different colors.

The melted soap is very hot!  Yowch!

Funny sidenote: the box probably also is sold in Canada, so the back looks just like the front, but all in French.  I learned from the French instructions that “melted soap” is “savon fondu”… mmmmm… soap fondue.

Finished Soaps… and a Small Problem

Image

These came out really nice.  The only problem was that I waited a little too long to put the final clear layer on the bottom of the big bar.  Because the big bar had cooled too much, the clear layer doesn't stick very well to it.  You can see that in the section that had been cut away, the clear part promptly fell right off!

Lynnea says:  There is the flower!  Now can you see it?
