Bullet Movie Review #4

I've watched a lot of movies recently, and it would take forever to write reviews of all of them, so here is my fourth sort of bi-annual Bullet Movie Review!

Needless to say these opinions are mine and mine alone, and some of them may offend you.  If you are offended by any of my reviews here, please keep in mind, it's only a movie.

Rating Title Bullet Review
Ab-Normal Beauty
2004: (Horror)
A young photography student witnesses a car crash and becomes obsessed with photographing death. Is it over yet?

The Eye, The Grudge, and The Ring were awesome horror flicks made in (or inspired by versions made in) Asian countries. Since their success Tartan Asia Extreme has been bringing us loads of Asian Horror Movies which by and in large, suck.

Still waiting for next awesome one, and this ain't it.

Aeon Flux
2005: (SciFi/Action)
I've reviewed this previously on ULev. I was surprisingly happy with this movie and would watch it again. Charlize Theron plays Aeon Flux an operative fighting against a tyrannical ruler of the Earth's last remaining outpost of humanity in the 25th century.

Alien Apocalypse
2005: (SciFi/Comedy)
Made for TV, starring Bruce Campbell, this sci-fi thing is pretty much a waste of time. I watched it almost a year ago on the Sci-Fi channel. Then I saw it in the video store six months later and (having completely forgotten it) picked it up took it home and watched it again, realizing almost immediately that I had seen this before. So what's it about? I don't really remember, but according to the back cover Bruce Campbell is a scientist who wakes from cryo sleep in the future to find the Earth overrun and enslaved by alien bugs.

This movie is anything but memorable, I'd give it a miss if I were you.

  BloodRayne
2005: (Fantasy/Action/Horror)
Previously reviewed on ULev, this movie takes the rare honor of receiving no stars at all, which is ironic given its star studded cast. Once again Uwe Boll demonstrates how not to make a movie. What a dork.

Cave, The
2005: (Horror/Action)
Now you may have thought I already reviewed this. But in fact I hadn't. The movie I was referring to in that passing review was “The Cavern” (you can see why it might be possible to mix up the names!) The Cave was much better than The Cavern. And it still sucked. At the start this movie was interesting, but it quickly became boring and pointless. Basically it is about a bunch of cave divers who are pursued by monsters. Is it over yet?

Cavern, The (WIthIN)
2005: (Horror)
Released in Australia under the title “WIthIN”, I mistakenly referred to this film as The Cave when I recently reviewed it. This movie is in fact miles worse than The Cave. A group of spelunkers go to explore an as yet uncharted cave deep in the Kyzyl Kum Desert in central Asia. Deep within the cave, something boring awaits.

Given that this film was the winner in the Fan Favorite category at the 2005 Shriekfest, I have to wonder how impossibly bad the other contenders were. In fact that would make a far better tagline for this movie than “descend into terror”. The Cavern… “impossibly bad”.

Cello
2005: (Horror)
More Asian horror. A beautiful cellist survives a car accident (starting to sound familiar?) but begins being haunted by memories of the accident and there's like a ghost and bad stuff happens. Is it over yet? Is it just me or is Asian horror starting to become more like American horror?

Creep
2004: (Horror)
An insane mutated killer chases Franka Potente back and forth through the subway tunnels in this euro-horror flick which will likely bore you to tears. Ya okay, that sucked. Next? Y'know I really have to stop renting movies just because they contain an actress who I think is attractive.

Oh and a big high five to the makeup/costume “experts” on this movie who managed to make Franka Potente completely unattractive. Good job guys. I have to wonder what sort of conversations the costumers had as they decided on an outfit for Franka… “What about this dress? Doesn't make her butt look wide enough. Well then how about this one, it definitely makes her fanny look huge. Yeah but now she doesn't look bowlegged, she has to be bowlegged.”

Dead Birds
2004: (Horror)
There are worse things than dying,' the tagline of this movie reads. To which I add that sitting through this dreck is one of them. A band of bankrobbers is on the run from the law and hole up in an abandoned house. The souls trapped in the haunted house drive these criminals mad, turning them against each other while transforming them into sickly semi-human creatures. Sounds cool doesn't it? It's not. It's a 91-minute yawnfest. Is it over yet?

  Dog Soldiers
2002: (Horror/Action)
Another zero-star piece of crap euro-horror shlock. A group of soldiers are dispatched to the woods to perform training exercises (war games). Then the werewolves come along. Is it over yet? This movie put me to sleep TWICE. I so love Sean Pertwee… too bad he got involved in this oinker.

Edison Force
2005: (Thriller)
This crime/drama/thriller involves a young reporter trying to expose a corrupt group of police officers. It certainly isn't the best police action film ever, but I enjoyed it. It helps that it stars 3 actors I really like, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, and Cary Elwes.

Face
2004: (Horror)
Hyun-min, a former forensic sculptor, is requested to help the police capture a serial killer who uses acid to reduce his victims to bones. Once the bones are in his house, Hyun-min's daughter begins to experience horrifying visions. Another flick from Tartan Asia Extreme. I was struck at the resolution to this story how it seemed more like an American ghost story than an Asian one. It didn't *suck* though. I guess I enjoyed it enough.

Fallen Ones, The
2005: (Fantasy)
Is it over yet? This made for TV pile of poo was way worse than Alien Apocalypse. An archaeologist discovers a forty-foot tall mummy buried in the American Southwest, and before long giants walk among us. The only thing about this movie I liked was seeing Tom Bosley again. It's been a long time since Happy Days.

Firefly, the Complete Series
2002: (SciFi)
Although the acting is uneven in this short sci-fi series that ran between 2002 and 2004 and was the progenitor of the movie Serenity which was previously reviewed on ULev, I still enjoyed it immensely. The cowboys in space thing wore on me some, but apart from that it was still a lot of fun. If you like sci-fi, I heartily recommend you check out the adventures of the FireFly-class ship Serenity, and her crew of smugglers.

Flightplan
2005: (Thriller)
An aircraft designer boards a plane with her young daughter and who disappears midflight, but nobody has seen her, and according to the crew our heroine came on board alone. Can she get her daughter back? Was she ever there?

This is not a heart-stopping thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, but it's not complete ass either. Of course, I only watched it for Jodie Foster, and given how much I like her I was somewhat disappointed by this film because my expectations were higher. There's nothing wrong with her acting, it is flawless as always, just that the premise of the film is pretty unbelievable.

Fog, The
2005: (Horror)
Apart from the obvious highpoint of seeing Maggie Grace in her underwear, this film has little to offer.

I would further go on to say that this movie has gone the unfortunate route of relying on special effects rather than an understandable plot. The conclusion of this film makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. What a disappointment. Instead of using this as an opportunity to improve on the original movie The Fog, the makers of this film instead made a worse movie. Which is really saying something since the original was pretty bad too.

What a disappointment.

Hole, The
2001: (Drama)
This movie is a grueling picture to watch, partly because some of it is disturbing, but mostly because it is so mind-numbingly stupid. What you get is the same story told three times over, each time closer to the truth, and each time no more believable than the last. The premise of this film is outlandish, and the ease with which the principal villain manages to get away with her crimes is ridiculous. Nothing, not even Kiera Knightly flashing her boobies, could save this film.

Killer Tongue
1996: (Comedy/SciFi/Horror)
One half of a husband and wife bankrobber team hides out in New Mexico with four pastel colored poodles, awaiting the release of her husband who is being held in a brutal Mexican prison under the sadistic eye of a guard played by Robert Englund.

One night while she hides out, a pink glowing meteorite crashes in the desert, and a small piece of it shears off, flies through the window of her hideout, and lands in her soup, which she somehow doesn't notice. She and her dogs end up eating the soup and in the morning they are all transformed. The dogs into effeminate transvestites, and she now has a 12 foot long tongue which hungers for human flesh, and makes the world's worst wisecracks.

Yes it talks.

Melinda Clarke plays the criminal host of the killer tongue spawned by the hot pink meteorite (which btw has the curious effect of arousing and then exploding most people who touch it). This movie is bizarre and although it has some mildly funny parts, most of the time when it tries to be funny it fails. Weird flick.

Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, the
2004: (Comedy)
This freakishly strange comedy is probably not the sort of thing you'd expect from Bill Murray. Zissou, an obvious parody of Jacques Cousteau, wants revenge on the Jaguar Shark that ate his partner Esteban. In his quest to fight the Jaguar Shark, which nobody has ever seen but he, Zissou encounters a man who claims to be his son, pirates who kidnap a member of his crew, a pregnant journalist who may be out to do him some harm, and a whole host of other memorable characters and events, not to mention strange technicolor animals which seem to be just about everywhere.

The Life Aquatic is not your typical knee slapper, but I thought it was a riot, mostly because of how outlandish the characters are. This film was a rare treat.

Matador, The
2005: (Dark Comedy)
I can say with assurance that I have never seen Pierce Brosnan play a character like Julian Noble, a hit man who is coming apart at the seams. Brosnan's characters are almost always suave, composed, upstanding sorts. Julian Noble is anything but. I didn't enjoy this film as much as I might have since I have a problem with its amorality,

I just can't accept a film that tries to paint an assassin as the sort of person you would want to be friends with. It is an interesting character story though, and I suspect if you enjoy such sorts of films, you might like this one.

Minotaur
2006: (Fantasy/Horror)
Asstastical made-for-TV spooge. WTF is with these sci-fi channel abortions? Yechhh. One would think the story of the minotaur could actually form the basis of an interesting movie, and perhaps it could, but this is certainly not the sort of evidence you'd want to use to support that assertion.

Night Watch
2004: (Fantasy)
This piece of crap comes to us from Russia. The forces of light and darkness are all around us, waging a continual battle, which is continually continuing… is it over yet?

Prince of Darkness,
John Carpenter’s

1987: (Horror)
1987??? I've seen this film a few times over the last 15 years or so. I still enjoy it, and not because it is a good movie, far from it. But it's easy to make fun of, and I find myself laughing at some of the more silly bits.

Some graduate students and scientists are studying a weird container of glowing green goo discovered in the basement of an abandoned church. Turns out that this container is basically a bucket-o-satan and once opened, look out humanity!

Return of the Living Dead
Necropolis

2005: (Horror)
Easily the worst of the “Return of the Living Dead” films. Thanks a bunch guys for fucking up a halfway decent franchise. Bad acting, ridiculous plot, altogether a waste. I recommend that nobody see this, particularly fans of zombie films.

  7 Mummies
2005: (Horror)
Previously mentioned on ULev. Some convicts escape from the vehicle transporting them, taking a beautiful prison guard with them as a hostage. In trekking across the desert they discover a gold medallion and then a mysterious Apache who tells them of the legendary Tumacacori treasure, guarded by seven mummified Jesuit priests. The criminals go in search of the treasure encountering a town full of zombies that the mummies have created to help guard it.

I fell asleep thrice watching this steaming pile, so I can't tell you how it ends. What I can tell you is I don't care how it ends and neither will you. Zero stars. Skip it.

Shallow Ground
2004: (Horror)
The town of Shallow Valley is scheduled for destruction, soon to be swallowed by the body of water created by the building of a new dam. For the police chief Jack Shepard, it can't happen too soon–he is eager to leave Shallow Valley behind and the memories of the brutal unsolved murders that occurred there far behind.

But the appearance of a naked boy drenched in blood heralds the beginning of a new nightmare, and it reaches far beyond the confines of Shallow Valley.

What I liked about this horror flick was that it was actually quite original. I didn't completely understand the ending, but I didn't mind so much, I was taken with the underlying idea of the film. So nice to see something a little bit new.

Troy
2004: (Action)
I enjoyed this retelling of the story of Achilles from the Iliad, I know a lot of people who didn't, but I loved the cinematography with sweeping grand vistas, the epic battles and excellent fight scenes. If you enjoyed Gladiator, I'd say it's a fair bet you'll enjoy Troy as well.

Ultraviolet
2006: (SciFi/Action)
Her name is Violet, and she comes from a world that you may not give a shit about. Is it over yet? Though I'm always a proponent of Milla Jovovich kicking ass in tight pants, there just really wasn't anything to recommend this overly computer enhanced trainwreck. Just go watch Resident Evil again if you are a Jovovich fan. Aeon Flux was better than this film, and that's saying something.

Unborn But Forgotten
2002: (Horror)
Just when you thought it was safe to go on the internet, here comes Tartan Asia Extreme again with a movie about a website that kills every woman who views it within 15 days.

Now you should not assume this is some sort of knock-off of The Ring, because in that film it was a videotape that killed everybody who watched it in 7 days. See? Website, 15 days–VHS casette, 7 days… completely different concept.

Why do I get the feeling you're not convinced? Would it help if I said the antagonist is the spirit of a life cut short too soon?

OKAY I ADMIT IT, IT'S A SHITTY KNOCK-OFF OF THE RING.

If Tom Servo were here, he would doubtlessly note “This is just like The Ring, except it's not good at all.”

Underworld Evolution
2006: (Action/Horror)
Underworld never really impressed me. It was good enough, which is to say watchable. Underworld Evolution is perhaps, slightly better, but as in the first film the winning moments of this one are the action sequences (well, that and Kate Beckinsale in leather.)

V for Vendetta
2005: (Drama/Action)
V is the only name by which the horribly scarred and masked man goes in his quest to smash the totalitarian regime which controls Britain in this dystopian view of the future.

I enjoyed this strange but compelling film immensely, particularly V's wonderful dialog. Hugo Weaving (Agent Smith from The Matrix) was terrific as V, and Natalie Portman was likewise fantastic in her portrayal as Evie, the woman hopelessly caught up in his grand plan. Bravo!

Visitors
2003: (Thriller)

Okay this is another one of those viewed-because-Chuck-likes-the-actress films, and surprisingly, the film turned out to be halfway decent.

This is what you call one of them psychological thrillers. Georgia Perry is sailing solo around the world, and after six months finds herself stuck in the Indian Ocean with no wind for days on end. She is not permitted to row or use an engine without forfeiting the attempt, and so she remains, with only a (talking) cat and her slippery grip on reality for company.

She soon discovers she is not alone on her tiny boat, and that the boat and its problems are directly linked to her own internal demons. It's not a great film, but I enjoyed it, and not just because of Radha Mitchell and her bikini. I wouldn't recommend it for purchase, but as a rental, sure, why not? It beats Killer Tongue!  Come on… it's got… pirates… old ladies that turn into spiders… Radha Mitchell in a bikini…

When a Stranger Calls
2006: (Horror/Thriller)
“We've traced the calls, they're coming from inside the house!” Who could forget that classic moment from the original When a Stranger Calls?

In the original film, the sequence with the babysitter only lasts for the initial 20 minutes. Then the killer is captured and comes back years later to terrorize her in adulthood.  In this version, the sequence of the killer terrorizing the babysitter comprises the entire film.

In many ways the makers of this film tried hard to make it true to the concept of the original, focusing more on terror and suspense, than on gore. In an opening segment when a policeman investigates the scene of a murder carried out by this killer, the audience does not see the remains of the victim, only the officer's reaction.

But much of the movie, perhaps because it is trying to play on a plotline that worked in 1979 but doesn't now, misses the mark as far as scariness. I recall one point early in the film, the babysitter, Jill Johnson (played by Camilla Belle), is sitting in the living room of the Mandrakis' gorgeous country mansion with her homework on her lap glancing about… the sun is streaming in through the many windows offering a view of the lake beyond, and ominous music is playing for no apparent reason. Keep in mind absolutely nothing scary has happened to her yet, and the house isn't in the least bit creepy. I just couldn't get into this picture. Felt too much like 70's fare. One and a half stars.

Wicker Man, The
1973: (Horror/Thriller)
Police Sergeant Howie visits a remote Scottish Island to investigate a missing girl. He discovers the islands inhabitants are pagans and believes that the girl is to be sacrificed during a harvest ritual. He races to find the girl and save her, and makes a startling discovery at the film's end.

This goofy film, decidedly weird and VERY 1970's, is nonetheless a classic, and I enjoyed watching it again so many years after the first time I saw it which would have been sometime in the 1980's. It stars Christopher Lee as “Lord Summerisle” the community leader of the island, and he is wonderful as always. If you're a fan of Christopher Lee, this film definitely deserves your attention. If you're not a Lee fan, and you generally dislike 70's era eroticism and horror, definitely give this movie a pass.

Wrath of the Dragon God,
Dungeons and Dragons

2005: (Fantasy)
Okay I liked this film, and you probably won't. Yes it was mind-numblingly bad, but it was mind-numblingly bad in the way that Dungeons & Dragons-inspired movies are supposed to be bad.

Evil Damodar has risen from the dead and has a powerful black orb thing with which he intends to do very bad things to the Empire of Izmer. In response Izmer sends a band of its finest adventurers to defeat Damodar.

Who will win?

Who will care?

  1. I hope the remake of Wicker Man is MUCH better, and I'm not a real fan of the original but I liked the concept and I like the weirdness.
I agree – V for Vendetta was a much better film than the other films you've reviewed. I've seen many of these other films, and your ratings are pretty much spot on. As for the remaining ones… thanks for the warning!

  2. hey I just saw the Matador. We rented it. I actually thought it was interesting. I agree that the amorality of Brosnan's character is wierd but overall the movie was interesting.

  3. Holy crap you watched a lot of suck! Thanks for weeding out the junk for me. I've only seen a few of those. I saw “Life Aquatic” and got bored out of my skull. I actually shut it off halfway through. The characters were on the outlandish side, but I just didn't care.
Love Firefly. I actually own the series on DVD. The characters were all interesting and well written.
Shame about Ultraviolet. I was going to rent that one. Looked cool.

  4. Just saw V. (About 45 minutes ago, now) Subtle as a sledgehammer :D Very cool.
I'm just about to order the Firefly series. I don't know if you've seen Serenity, the movie based on Firefly, but I strongly suggest it for any sci-fi fan.
